Guide to buying Persian mineral salt
Salt is the base of flavor in cooking, but there is a big difference between factory-refined salt and Persian mineral salt left in its natural state. Rock salt formed underground over millions of years and contains small amounts of other minerals such as potassium, magnesium, calcium and iron. All Zaal salts are only crushed and sorted mechanically; no acid washing or chemical anti-caking agent is used.
These products are foods and are not a substitute for medicine or medical advice.
Zaal mineral salts compared
| Salt | Origin | Look | Notable mineral | Best use |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Pink salt | Mountain mines of Iran | Pink to clay-colored crystals | Iron and magnesium oxides | Everyday cooking, rice and stews |
| Blue salt | Rare veins in the Semnan mines | Sky-blue veins in clear crystals | Sylvite (natural potassium) | Finishing steak, salad and kebab |
| Delnamak (halite) | Pure core of the salt rock | Clear like glass | Very pure sodium chloride | Clean saltiness without bitterness |
| Spirulina salt | Mineral salt with pure spirulina | Dark green, mild herbal aroma | Spirulina protein and phycocyanin | Salads and savory snacks |
Choosing the right salt
- Persian pink salt: Its soft pink color comes from natural iron and other minerals. For bread, stews and rice choose Persian pink rock salt 1kg (1 to 5 kg packs). For the table there are the Persian pink salt grinder 150g and the Persian pink salt 350g grinder.
- Rare blue salt: One of the rarest edible salts in the world. Its blue veins come from changes in the crystal structure and potassium, and it has a lively taste with a pleasant sharp finish. Choose the bag of Persian blue salt 1kg, or the Persian blue salt grinder 150g and Persian blue salt 350g grinder.
- Crystal delnamak (halite): The clearest, purest part of the mine. Persian halite crystal salt 1kg (1 to 5 kg) is an economical everyday choice, and the crystal halite salt grinder 150g and crystal halite salt 350g grinder are for the table.
- Spirulina salt and blends: Iran Alga spirulina powder mixed with mineral salt, as spirulina mineral salt 500g, the spirulina salt grinder 150g and the spirulina salt 350g grinder. Mixed rock salt 1kg contains the three salts in equal parts.
- Sets and grinders: The Persian salt grinder set 1100g, the salt and pepper grinder gift set and, for coarse rock salt, the dual 2-in-1 salt and pepper grinder with an unbreakable ceramic blade.
How to recognize real colored salt
- Water test: Real pink or blue salt does not color the water when it dissolves; the water stays clear and some mineral sediment settles at the bottom. If the water quickly turns blue or pink, artificial color has been used.
- Color after grinding: In real blue salt the color is spread inside the crystal, so the ground powder is white with a very faint blue tint, not an even bright blue.
- Clear crystals: Real delnamak has clear, cube-shaped crystals like quartz glass, with no smell of petroleum and no chalky, bitter taste.
Storage
Because natural mineral salt has no anti-caking agent, it absorbs moisture from the air. Keep it in closed glass or ceramic containers in a dry, cool place away from cooking steam, and always use a dry spoon.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do Zaal mineral salts contain added iodine?
No. Zaal mineral salts are sold without chemical refining or industrial processing; they contain no added synthetic iodine or anti-caking agents.
Why do the blue veins look whiter after grinding?
The blue color comes from the way light is bent inside the sylvite crystals. When the crystals are ground into small particles, the effect weakens and the powder looks white with a faint blue tint, which is a sign of real blue salt.
Which mineral salt is best for everyday cooking?
Medium-grain pink salt and delnamak, because of their mild saltiness, clean taste and even dissolving, are the best choices for rice, stews and everyday home cooking.
How do you use coarse-grain salt at home?
Add it straight to the pot in dishes with liquid so it dissolves, or grind it fresh at the table with a grinder that has a ceramic blade.
